I travel with kids for a living as a professional travel nanny. I also have two grandsons whom I call The Boys. When they were 5 and 7 we decided, as older grandparents, we had a limited amount of time to leave them with adventure memories.
The first time...what would we do? What did we want to accomplish? We wanted them to understand the diversity of this land. It wasn't all sidewalks and buildings like in Brooklyn. I love the Grand Canyon and I wanted the boys to see this wonder.
How do we get there? Is the money the main concern? Do we want to make a statement?
I had a good year with my travel business so a bit of extra cash. My husband and I agreed that a train trip would be the best way to see the country. We certainly didn't want to drive at our age! We would leave NY and transfer in DC and from there to Chicago where we could get a sleeper.
But do we stop at Grand Canyon? Why not go all the way to California and since my husband grew up in San Diego we would go there after Grand Canyon!
And the Planning was off!
